Trail Crew: Moraine & McConnell's Mill State Park

by John Stehle, President, NCT -- Butler Chapter
Sixteen dedicated volunteers came to work at Moraine and McConnell's Mill State Parks, for KTA's first 2013 Trail Crew week. Our trail master, Tom Baumgardner, had several items that needed work. We began by cutting in the approach to a new bridge which will cross Muddy Creek, just below the dam of Lake Arthur. This trail and bridge will be a valuable connector to complete the great work conducted by the KTA Trail Crew week in 2011.

After that was done, work moved to McConnell's Mill State Park, on the North Country Trail (NCT). This work was a continuation of what was done on the 2012 KTA Trail Crew week, which involved the construction of rock steps on the western side of the Slippery Rock Creek. This year, we completed a great deal of rock-work on the Kildoo Trail, on the eastern side of the same creek. Walking the mile down one side -- and a mile back the other side -- is a very popular activity in this park. Making a path that the average walker can handle is very important.

Another day was spent clearing an overlook along the NCT which provides a view of Lake Arthur, a much-needed break from the "green tunnel."

Overnight accommodations were at Moraine State Park's 18th-Century Davis Hollow Cabin, which is maintained by the NCT.

Thanks, KTA, for helping to keep our trails great in PA!
