100-Mile Challenge: Trish Zawistowski

As a New Jersey native, KTA member Trish Zawistowski says her most memorable hiking experience was right before Hurricane Sandy, when she hiked 13 miles of the Appalachian Trail with her 25-year-old son.

Although it was her son’s first time backpacking, Trish has been hiking for over 20 years. Now at the age of 44, she has decided to take KTA’s 100-Mile Trail Challenge to encourage herself to seek out more hiking, backpacking, and camping opportunities in the coming year.

Trish became involved with KTA when she started searching for more backpacking trails in Pennsylvania. For the Challenge, she plans to hike the Old Logger’s Path, the Horseshoe Trail, the Black Forest Trail, and parts of the PA AT. Currently her favorite trails in Pennsylvania include the Falls Trail at Rickett’s Glen, Bushkill Falls, and the Boone Trail in winter at French Creek. Trish says that anyone can hike, and her favorite thing about it is the solitude; turning off your brain and tuning into your surroundings brings an inner peace to Trisha that keeps bringing her back to the trails. For her, Mark Twain said it best: “20 years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do… Sail away from safe harbour. Explore. Dream. Discover."
