100-Mile Challenge Profile: Ginger Roberts

by Cassandra Romanawski, KTA Intern

Born into a military family, Ginger Roberts moved around quite often, but considers Tennessee to be home. She recalls spending a lot of time outdoors, camping and hiking, with her family. It even became a fond tradition for her family to hike each Christmas Day. Now, at the age of 58, Ginger hikes every 4 or 5 days, which she says brings her true peace with herself and the world. For Ginger, it is the journey - not the destination - that matters the most.
Ginger became involved with Keystone Trails Association while searching for trails to hike in her new "home" state of Pennsylvania. She has  decided to take KTA's 100-Mile Challenge not only help raise funds for trail maintenance, but also to inspire her grandsons. She aspires to hike the Appalachian Trail, and this challenge will help facilitate her ambition of backpacking longer distances. Not even the frigid Pennsylvania winter could deter her from her objective, as she has recently bought a pair of snowshoes.

Ginger has already reached mile 79.9 of her 500-mile personal challenge goal, by hiking such footpaths as the Black Forest Trail, Standing Stone Trail, and the Old Logger's Path. Every week she  encounters a new favorite trail; last week it was Hosack Run. She never hits the trail without confidence and an emergency kit, and advises new hikers to "be prepared, not scared".

Ginger took the Challenge. Will you?  Any hiker seeking a personal challenge, while also helping to protect Pennsylvania's hiking trails is invited to participate in KTA's 2013 100-Mile Challenge! Click here for more information.
