Maintainer's Corner: Bear Run Trail Care

By Brian Jones, Land Steward, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy

During the weekend of Nov. 10th, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy hosted a Keystone Trails Association Trail Care event at Bear Run Nature Reserve in the Laurel Highlands of Fayette County.  Six KTA volunteers joined eight Conservancy staff and volunteers (see photo to left) in constructing around 400 feet of new trail.  This is part of a larger trail renovation project across the Reserve. The work included installing natural stone steps, bench cutting, grade reversals, and lots of duff removal on the new trail. Housing for the crew was provided on the Reserve. This was the third KTA Trail Care weekend held at Bear Run, and we are sincerely grateful for all the assistance and expertise KTA has provided us. We look forward to hosting KTA again next year.
