Maintainer's Corner

Volunteers from the Friends of Gifford Pinchot State Park, the Mason-Dixon Trail System and KTA gathered on Saturday, October 6th for the last scheduled one-day "Code Orange" trail care of the 2012 season. This was the second year that KTA had brought its 'Code Orange' banner to Pinchot, and the sixth state park that KTA's Trail Care Program partnered with in 2012 to help upgrade hiking trails within their borders.

A hardy contingent of nineteen volunteers worked alongside park staff to address a perennially wet section of the Lakeside/Mason-Dixon Trail on the south side of Pinchot Lake, and to lop and re-blaze the trail on the north side of the lake. Using Geotech fabric and mesh provided by the park, the south shore Crew spread stone along the targeted wet area. This effectively built up the grade in a manner that allows water-flow through. Volunteers logged 120 hours of dedicated work at the park for the day.

To cap off the event, the Friends of Gifford Pinchot hosted a cookout at the Conewago Day Use Area. Everyone enjoyed relaxed camaraderie while partaking in an abundant spread of delicious fare. The park also offered free camping for volunteers on both Friday and Saturday nights.
