"Parks for Cash" Update

Hikers can rejoice because the "Parks for Cash" bill is dead! Pennsylvania House Bill 2224 died in the Senate.

HB 2224 would have radically changed PA law. Depending on the arcane details of how a local park was established, particular methods of acquisition would make them susceptible to losing their long-standing protections. This would ultimately leave our parks vulnerable to political whims and quick sale for easy cash, regardless of how frequently used or enjoyed the parks are.

If bill proponents still wish to see legislation enacted, they will have to start by introducing a new bill in 2013. KTA will make sure that members and supporters are properly informed and engaged in the new legislative process from the beginning.

Opposition from conservation organizations such as the Keystone Trails Association helped to stop this bill. The defeat of this bill is a testimony to you and others like you who contacted or visited your State Senators to protest this threat to hiking trails and open space.

Please take a few minutes today to express your thanks to your legislators and their aides. They need to hear from you that their efforts and willingness are appreciated.
