Member Profile: Michael Cunningham

Born in Danbury, CT, Michael Cunningham has been hiking for 55 of his 66 years. He became involved with KTA many years ago after reading KTA's Pennsylvania Hiking Trails book. With 145 miles remaining until he completes the Pennsylvania portion of the Appalachian Trail (AT), Michael decided to attempt KTA's 100-mile challenge to push him to finish it, along with exploring the Loyalsock, Thunder Swamp, Chuck Keiper, Horseshoe, and Mason Dixon trails. The best advice he offers to new hikers is to "Go out, find a trail, and just take a hike!"

KTA's 2013 100-Mile Challenge started on September 1, and will end on August 31, 2013. Michael took the Challenge. Will you? Click here to learn more about how to participate, or keep reading!

We had quite a successful inaugural year for our 100-Mile Trail Challenge! Between April and September, 2012, twelve participants hiked a combined total of 1,603 miles of Pennsylvania's trails, and raised a total of $2,589 in sponsorship's to support KTA's mission to protect our hiking trails.

This year, we have provided participants with a full year to complete their personal Challenge. Participants are not only challenged to complete 100 (or more miles), but also to recruit sponsorship for each mile of their journey. Sponsorship may come from anywhere: relatives or friends, businesses, co-workers, your local hiking or outdoors club, social organization, etc. You may find one sponsor to cover all 100 miles, or ten sponsors to cover every ten miles, or any combination that works for you. Every dollar raised will help provide, preserve, protect, and promote our hiking trails in Pennsylvania.

Anyone who is seeking a personal challenge, while also helping to protect Pennsylvania's hiking trails, is welcome to participate. Click here for more information about the 2013 100-Mile Trail Challenge.
