Club Connection: Lancaster Hiking Club News

by Diana Ludwig, KTA Representative, Lancaster Hiking Club

We lucked out overall on the Conestoga Trail from the past year's storms! Tropical Storm Lee only caused us to lose some stiles over an electric fence that KTA helped install about 10 years ago, and a board walkway was lost upstream from Snavely's Mill.
Only a few trees were down on the trail from the "Snowtober" storm. Club member Doug Kutz got up one morning this Spring and decided he would rebuild the lost boardwalk. The walkway spanned across a ditch on the C.T.S. south of Rt. 501 that has long been a problem and is getting worse. Doug knew that the floods on the Susquehanna River brought good pressure treated lumber down the river and left it in debris piles. Doug collected this lumber, used hardware that he had at home, and needed only to purchase a few large 8" bolts to lock the 8' span of 4" x 4" lumber to the ditch. He built the walkway in his garage, took it apart, and then re-aassembled it on location. What a great service Doug has done for hikers who use the trail! Well done! Doug even made x-scratches in the wood so it would not be slippery!
