Dear Friends,
Have you recently hiked near a gas pad site, experienced noise, land, or water pollution as a result of the drilling activities, or had your hike affected negatively by the drastic alteration of the visual landscape? Worse yet, have you been booted off the trail by an errant security guard, or had an unexpected re-route around a gas well? Then you know how dependent our trails are on Keystone Trails Association’s (KTA’s) advocacy efforts in Harrisburg.
The cost of building, maintaining, and protecting the hiking trails themselves is significant. Volunteers spend thousands of man-hours on the trails each year, with loppers, brush cutters, chainsaws, and paintbrushes, keeping Pennsylvania’s hiking trails accessible, beautiful and well-marked for all of us.
No amount of brush-cutting or trailblazing will help us, however, if our trails are overrun by gas drillers, ATV-ers, and other damaging external forces. Pennsylvania’s trails need protection through advocacy efforts at the state and local levels. That advocate is KTA.
Keystone Trails Association is Pennsylvania’s only organization that advocates for trails across Pennsylvania. We cannot fight gas drilling on an independent or volunteer basis. We cannot strengthen our relationship with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and our state and local government on a volunteer basis. We must have a strong, professional presence in Harrisburg. This presence costs money.
