On July 26, contractors for South Middletown Township replaced the walking bridge that carries the Appalachian Trail over a stream near the Furnace Stack just south of Children's Lake in Boiling Springs. The new bridge replaced an old deteriorating walking bridge there. A crane was brought in to remove the old bridge and replace it with a new one.
South Middleton Township Supervisor Tom Faley said the wood of the old bridge was rotting and it had become unsound. The bridge is used heavily by A. T. hikers.
Township engineer Brian O’Neill told the township that given the condition of the old bridge, it would cost less to replace it than it would to repair it. The cost of the replacement project is $19,000. Faley said the old bridge was built in 1984 by Boiling Springs High School industrial arts students.
