PROGRESS ON KTA'S APPALACHIAN TRAIL SECTION

by Jim Foster, KTA Board of Directors, Secretary

We've accomplished a lot since we reported in the May Keystone Hiker that KTA has officially taken over the Lehigh Gap section of the Appalachian Trail (AT), near the town of Palmerton and straddling Carbon, Lehigh, and Northampton Counties. We’ve assigned managers for several important tasks. Dennis Hurley will manage the subsection from Lehigh Gap to Little Gap, including the Winter Trail. Ed Ritter will manage the subsection from Lehigh Gap to Lehigh Furnace Gap, including the North and South side trails. Dennis and Ed are very experienced at maintaining trails, with Dennis active in the Cumberland Valley AT Club and the Mountain Club of Maryland and Ed active in the Allentown Hiking Club. Dennis and Ed have each assigned maintainers for portions of their subsections.

Charlie Ogle will manage the parking lots and sign kiosks. Charlie is also active in Appalachian Mountain Club Delaware Valley Chapter. Bill Berndt will manage the maintenance of the corridor boundary. Thanks to sign maker Vern Graham, we have new signs at each end announcing that KTA is now in charge of the section, along with boxes for KTA brochures. Our friends at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center have given us the use of a storage building at the Nature Center to store tools. We've just heard from our friends at the Philadelphia Trail Club that they will donate to KTA the tools that they formerly used to maintain this section of the A.T. THANK YOU, LGNC & PTC!!!

We plan to announce some group workdays on the section. These workdays will be announced on KTA’s Meetup Group page on Facebook. If you’d like to keep up-to-date on the progress of our section, join KTA’s Lehigh Gap AT Section Group on Facebook. Questions and comments can be directed to ktalehighgapat@gmail.com.
