MAY 2016 APPEAL

By Joe Neville, KTA Executive Director

 Dear Friend,

Here’s a phrase you might know: Trails don’t maintain themselves. With National Trails Day, Pennsylvania Hiking Week, and the National Park Service Centennial inspiring us to take a hike, consider contributing to KTA today to preserve our pristine trail systems for tomorrow.

More people are hiking. This is good—spending time in Penn’s Woods is healthy for your mind, body, and spirit. But more feet on the trails means our core of volunteers must grow, and that means more programs and promotional endeavors for KTA.

According to American Hiking Society, The National Park Service needs $655,000,000 to maintain its 18,000 miles of trails. The volunteers of KTA’s Trail Care program and clubs maintain 3,000 miles of trails. In 2015, they worked 2,957 hours on Pennsylvania’s trails. Together with our member clubs, that number jumps to more than 12,000 hours. Imagine how the trails might be without that help.

Help us raise our relatively modest goal of $30,000 by National Trails Day on June 4 by sending a check or donating online via the KTA Web site.

If every member gives $22, we’ll meet our goal. Consider giving $60 or more as KTA celebrates its 60th year as the voice of Pennsylvania’s hikers and the caretaker of the state’s trails.

Remember, KTA is entirely member supported. Contributions from you, the trustees of Pennsylvania’s natural resources, make KTA’s work possible.

Consider becoming a sustaining member by enrolling into our Keep Trails Alive monthly donor program. You can rest easy knowing that as you enjoy the rustic footpaths of Pennsylvania, you’re also supporting their maintenance.

See you on the trails!

Sincerely,

Joe Neville
