Keystone Trails Association is excited to host the 8th annual KTA Trail Challenge (formerly Susquehanna Super Hike and Ultra Trail Run). Changing the name led to the addition of many new perks for participants. The 25k will now start at Susquehannock State Park, which will offer more restrooms and more parking for hikers. The 50k still starts at Pequea Creek Campground. We’ve also added more buses for easier transportation back to your car after the event is finished. At the end of the hike, there will now be a catered picnic, provided by Legends Catering of York.
The event still offers significant challenges and gorgeous vistas throughout the Conestoga Trail System and Mason Dixon Trail. Throughout the hike, checkpoints will offer restrooms, snacks, and hydration replenishments. Participants all receive a tech t-shirt, and finishers will receive a medallion.
Many are wondering what the status of the event will be, regarding the conflict at Holtwood Recreation Area. Previously, both hikes went through this privately-owned property. By moving the 25k start to Susquehannock State Park, we’ve successfully avoided this area. However, the 50k trail still crosses a small portion of the property. The KTA Board is currently discussing options regarding this issue. We are discouraging any suggestions of merely trespassing. The section of the hike in question may be moved, however it has not been decided as of yet how much of the path will be moved or to where.
Earlier this year, a media report said that this conflict would essentially cancel the event. KTA’s Program Administrator Sara Haxby responded, “We’re disappointed that the announcement caused any thoughts of cancellation. This is a beloved event for serious hikers and trail runners. KTA is determined to make this our best year yet, and we’re working our hardest to appease all parties involved.” The Association is moving forward to overcome this obstacle.
We would like to enthusiastically verify that the event is in no way cancelled, and deter any negative attention this issue has drawn to the event. We are moving full speed ahead with preparations and can’t wait to see everyone in September!
