WHIPPLE DAM RECAP

by Ed Lawrence, KTA Trail Care Chair

Kudos to the 10 volunteers who came to Whipple Dam State Park, Huntingdon County, on May 7 for a Code Orange event. These folks got to enjoy the sunniest day of the week while working to improve the Whipple Lake Trail hiking loop. One crew, consisting mainly of Standing Stone Trail members, spent the morning working on several rock projects along Laurel Run; a second crew dug a side hill reroute that took the trail away from a steep, eroded bank and short road walk; and a third crew did some lopping and reblazing. Everyone enjoyed a great picnic lunch sponsored by the Friends of Greenwood Furnace, Whipple Dam and Penn Roosevelt group. The afternoon saw the volunteers straightening 2 flood-skewed bridges and setting more rock steps. Thanks again to Vonny Boarts, Catherine McLaughlin, Tom Bastian, Betty and Joe Clark, Burgess Smith, Kyle and Jim Garthe, Ken Horting, and Ed Lawrence for putting in a total of 56 work hours and leaving the park a better place to hike.
