SATC GARLIC MUSTARD CHALLENGE 2016

by Lorrie Preston, SATC "Weed Warrior Coordinator"

Correction 5/4/16: the original article named Lorrie as the SATC Vice President. She is no longer Vice President of SATC, Jim Stickney serves that position.

Our Susquehanna Appalachian Trail Club (SATC) Garlic Mustard Challenge event for 2016 is scheduled for Sunday, May 15. We will meet at the Dauphin County Park & Ride lot at 1:00 PM and carpool up to the Route 225 AT parking lot at the top of Peters Mountain. (Directions to Park and Ride: Take 322 west to the Rt. 225 exit. Bear off to the right immediately toward Dauphin and Water Gap signs. Turn left at the stop sign onto Allegheny St. Park and Ride lot is just a short distance up to the top of the hill on the left. GPS coordinates are 40.370613, -76.943743.)

I will bring sturdy trash bags and several pairs of garden gloves. I hope that you can join us that afternoon for some enjoyable camaraderie, a good excuse to hit the trail, and a time for giving back to the AT, which we hold near and dear. Bring your own garden gloves if you have them. Garlic mustard is easy to pull and does not require tools, particularly if the soil is moist, but it must be hauled out after pulling; otherwise, each plant will continue to mature and drop hundreds of seeds that will germinate the following year. Also be sure to wear sturdy boots and bring water and snacks.

If you plan to participate or have any questions, please contact me at lpreston5156@gmail.com so I’ll know the number of volunteers to expect that day. Thank you!
