100-MILE CHALLENGE PROFILE: SUSAN HENDERSON-UTIS

Meet Susan Henderson-Utis-

Your full name?

Susan Henderson-Utis.

Any nicknames?

No, just Susan.

Your age?

35.

Your hometown?

Media [Delaware County]. I moved here 5 years ago after 12 years in Washington, DC, and I love it here!

How long have you been hiking?

For as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest memories are of nature walks.

What is your earliest memory of hiking? Or most memorable hiking experience?

My sister and I were about 5, and we were hiking with our dad in central New York to see maple syrup tapping. It was cold and there was snow on the ground, but getting out in the woods was exhilarating! We lived in Manhattan at the time, and I thought being out in nature was the best thing ever.

Why did you decide to take the 100-Mile Trail Challenge?

I’m a lawyer and often spend time indoors at my desk, dealing with difficult and depressing issues. The best, happiest way for me to clear my head and improve my outlook is to go outside for a good nature hike. So my 2016 New Year’s resolution was to make hiking more of a priority. When I found out about the 100-Mile Trail Challenge, I knew I had to do it.

What are some of the trails you plan to hike on to meet this goal?

Ridley Creek State Park, the Middletown Township Trails (Linvill Trail, Indian Orchard, etc.), East Branch Brandywine Trail, the Heinz Nature Preserve, and the trails around Valley Forge.

What is your #1 favorite hiking trail in PA, and why is it your favorite?

Due to work and family issues, I can’t usually go too far afield. But for a special treat, I like hiking French Creek State Park. There are a variety of trails, covering a wide range of scenery (mountainside, creeks, woods, pastures). Some of the trails are challenging, and others are easy enough for me to take my children. So either way I am covered.

What is your favorite thing about hiking?

It’s uplifting and invigorating. Just being outdoors puts things into perspective for me and makes me feel better and calmer.

Who is sponsoring you so far (friends, family, coworkers, hiking club, etc.)?

Friends and family.

How did you hear about and first get involved with KTA?

I heard of KTA when I first moved to Pennsylvania 5 years ago. But due to family/work issues, I never got involved until now.

Do you have any advice to new hikers?

Enjoy it and go at your own pace. And ignore your e-mails.

What is the one thing you’ll never hit the trail without?

Water and snacks. I am one grumpy person when I’m hungry or thirsty.

Do you have a favorite nature/hiking quote that you can share with us (either your own or someone else’s)?

Anything by Robert Frost. My high school English class must have made a real impact on me, because I often think of “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” and “Two Look at Two.”

Anything else you’d like to share with us?

Just happy to be involved.
