In Grandma Gatewood’s Walk (2014), author Ben Montgomery traces the story of an unlikely heroine—a woman who, to escape personal struggles, in 1955, embarks on a journey of several thousand miles of rugged terrain…alone…without any equipment…at the age of 67.

Join Matt Kirk on April 23 for a talk and hike through Bucktoe Creek Preserve. In the last decade, Matt has thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail three times and a number of other long-distance trails across the country. Between hikes, he has worked as a state park ranger, middle and high school science teacher and volunteered with various land and trail conservancies. Matt lives in Gainesville, Florida with his wife Lily and dog Uwharrie (both thru-hikers). They practice living lightly on the land in a tiny house they built themselves.
From the TLCforSCC website: Matt Kirk set the record for the fastest self-supported thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail in August of 2013. He finished his hike in an astounding 58 days, 9 hours and 38 minutes, averaging 37.4 miles a day. Join Matt at TLC’s headquarters to hear the inspiring story of his hike. Get an inside look at the struggles Grandma Gatewood may have faced on her equally inspiring trek through the Appalachian Trail. Afterwards, head out on the trail with Matt to hike the adjacent 300-acre Bucktoe Creek Preserve. Please wear hiking shoes/sneakers, this will be an easy to moderate hike covering approximately 3 miles. Please pack a lunch, light breakfast will be provided. $5 for TLC members; $10 for non-members. Use the link above to learn more or sign up!
