PROWL THE SPROUL RECAP

KTA hosted the 12th Annual Prowl the Sproul Hiking Weekend from July 24 to July 26 in the Sproul State Forest of western Clinton County.

Within the Sproul is some of the most rugged and remote forestland in Pennsylvania. Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) guides and KTA volunteer hike leaders shared their insider knowledge of the trails while they lead hikers off the beaten path to explore the hidden jewels of the forest. This year, a variety of “cool” hike options were offered for hikers seeking refuge from Pennsylvania’s typically hot, humid summer weather

In addition to the terrific selection of day hikes already offered at Prowl the Sproul, 7 experienced and fit hikers slackpacked the 45-mile easternmost section of the famed Donut Hole Trail. The slackpack was guided by KTA Board President Wanda Shirk, with trail support from DCNR Equipment Operator and Local Woodsman Extraordinaire Ray Johnson and DCNR Forest Ranger Chris Moore. The orange-blazed Donut Hole Trail is a long-distance backpacking trail traversing 90 miles of the Sproul State Forest parallel to the West Branch Susquehanna River. It is among the most remote and challenging of the state’s backpacking trails and is for seasoned hikers only, with numerous steep climbs and unbridged stream crossings. The hikers slackpacked a new section of the rugged, scenic trail each day. By leaving behind heavy multiday backpacks and carrying only what they needed for a typical day hike, the hikers were able to cover long distances. At the end of each day, transportation was coordinated back to the Western Clinton Sportsmens Association clubhouse for hot showers and hearty meals!

On Friday, July 24, Pennsylvania Game Commission Bear Biologist Mark Ternent gave a presentation on the history, life cycle, behaviors and current research of bears in the Sproul State Forest. Mark is responsible for studying and managing Pennsylvania’s black bear population. Bears have been the focus of his career in wildlife research since 1991. An author and co-author of many wildlife articles and reports, Mark is a member of the International Association for Bear Research and Management, the Northeast Bear Technical Committee, the Mid-Appalachian Bear Study Group, and the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Wildlife Society.

The Western Clinton Sportsmens Association was our host for the weekend. Over 50 campers enjoyed the friendly, laid-back atmosphere and use of their clubhouse, campsites, hot showers, and fire circle.
