LAZZ TOOK THE CHALLENGE. WILL YOU?

Elizabeth (“Lazz”) Masi, 19, from Bear Creek Township, Luzerne County, recently registered to participate in KTA’s 100-Mile Trail Challenge. Lazz, who has been hiking since age 4, remembers her earliest forest treks through Bear Creek Camp.

She decided to take the 100-Mile Trail Challenge so she can “pay it forward” while doing something she loves; hiking provides her with a release from the stress of work and class. She follows John Muir’s advice: “Keep close to Nature’s heart and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.”

Lazz plans to spend the rest of this summer hiking the Pinchot Trail (her all-time favorite Pennsylvania hiking trail!), in Lackawanna State Forest, as well as the Appalachian Trail. She also wants to hike in Ohiopyle State Park, in Fayette County.

Advice to new hikers: “Always let someone know where you’re hiking, and definitely pack enough water.”

Backpack basics: “One thing that I'll never hit the trail without is my notebook. I love to sketch and journal when I take breaks!”
