KTA SPRING HIKING WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS BERKS COUNTY TRAILS

Harrisburg, PA, April 10, 2015 – Keystone Trails Association’s (KTA) annual Spring Hiking Weekend will provide over 100 Pennsylvania hikers with opportunities to explore the Blue Mountain region of the Appalachian Trail.  The event will be held from Friday, April 17 to Sunday, April 19 at Camp Swatara in Bethel, Berks County, PA.

Hikes will be guided by experienced leaders from the Blue Mountain Eagle Climbing Club (BMECC). Hike leaders will share their favorite trails with registered participants. The guided hikes offer an opportunity for non-locals to experience new and unfamiliar territory, and learn about different flora and fauna.

KTA Program Administrator Shanna Klucar said: “There really is something for everyone at KTA’s Spring Hiking Weekend!  We offer guided hikes ranging in length from 1 to 12 miles, so hikers of all levels of ability and fitness can participate.  We will provide opportunities to visit such regional hot-spots as the Rentschler Arboretum, Yellow Springs Ghost Town, Stony Valley Rail Trail, Rausch Gap, Onyx Cave, Pinnacle Overlook, Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, and the Conrad Weiser Homestead.  The BMECC’s expert hike leaders are not only knowledgeable about the trails, but also about the history of the area, so participants are sure to have a multi-faceted and enriching experience.” The full hike schedule is available online at www.kta-hike.org

In addition to hikes, there will also be a hoedown with Ken Saul and the Blue Marsh Ramblers, invasive plants workshop, 33’ climbing tower and ropes course, mini-golf, evening bonfire, bike rides, and boating.  On Saturday evening, Karen Lutz from the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Mid-Atlantic Region will give a keynote presentation about industry threats to regional hiking trails.

KTA President Wanda Shirk said:  “KTA’s Spring Hiking Weekend offers a fantastic opportunity for new hikers to learn more about proper gear and trail etiquette, and for seasoned hikers to explore different trails.  We especially welcome the participation of young people at this event; our family-friendly weekends are fun for nature-lovers of all ages!”

The registration fee for KTA’s Spring Hiking Weekend is only $20; children under age 18 are free.  More information about the weekend, and advance registration, is available online at www.kta-hike.org
