VIKING HIKING

by Paul Shaw, KTA Vice-President and Treks & Trails International co-owner

Iceland, August 8-18, 2015

The Viking lands of the far north offer some of the most memorable hiking on the planet! The Land of Fire and Ice (Iceland) features huge, thundering waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes, geysers, and small towns settled many centuries ago by Viking farmers. KTA Sponsor Treks & Trails International invites you to join us on an amazing hiking trip to Iceland, from August 8-18, 2015. From Reykjavik (the world’s northernmost capital city), we venture to the enormous Vatnajökull Glacier, Skaftafell National Park and Thórsmörk Nature Preserve, each offering spectacular hiking opportunities. Accommodations are in local hotels and comfortable cabins. This trip is guided by KTA V.P. Paul Shaw.

Sweden, August 9-20, 2015

The Kungsleden, located 100 miles above the Arctic Circle, is Sweden’s premier long-distance hiking trail. After a day in delightful Stockholm, we fly to Kiruna and the Arctic Circle, in the heart of Lapland and the Land of the Midnight Sun. From the trailhead in Abisko, the Kungsleden leads from hut to hut, through valleys of dwarf birch trees, over vast areas of treeless tundra, and past innumerable lakes, rivers and waterfalls. Reindeer herds are frequently encountered. The huts have fully-equipped kitchens, dormitory-style accommodations, and wonderful saunas. The dates for this trip are August 9-20, 2015.

Newfoundland, July 16-26, 2015

Another hiking trip with a Viking connection is our new Viking Trail trip on the west coast of Newfoundland, July 16-26. Our day hikes begin in Gros Morne National Park (and include the world-famous boat tour in Western Brook Pond Fjord), and continue up the coast until we reach the Viking outpost at L’Anse aux Meadows, the first European settlement in North America. Highlights include a stay on remote Quirpon Island where our lodging is a lighthouse converted to a B&B, and seldom-visited Grey Island. This is truly an “off the map” adventure.
