YOUR HIKING ADVOCATE, NOVEMBER 2014

by Curt Ashenfelter, Executive Director

I typically spend late September "hiking" the halls of the state capitol, advocating for the interests of Pennsylvania's hikers.

Unfortunately, this fall I learned I had kidney cancer, and on September 25 I "hiked" on over to Harrisburg Hospital and had that kidney removed. The surgery was considered a success and I am recovering well.

This month, I will begin a series of chemotherapy treatments that will conclude in January. My doctor advises that I will have “elements of fatigue” during my chemotherapy. I do not know exactly what that means, but I have been told that people respond differently to treatment, and that I may be slightly - or very - tired during that time. Hopefully, I will be one of those people who are only "slightly" tired and will be able to respond to emails, initiate telephone calls, and do other work as well. I will keep you posted on my progress.

I suspect that not too much will happen in state government that will impact hiking trails between now and the New Year, but I will continue to monitor the situation.

In the meantime, I wish you all the best for an excellent autumn on the trails. Please hike your favorite trail for me - if you'd like, send me a picture of your hike! - and I look forward to re-joining you on the trails in late winter!
